The Revere Fire Department’s mission is to protect the lives and property of all Revere residents. We respond to fires, medical emergencies, motor vehicle collisions, hazardous material incidents, technical rescue incidents, water rescues and all other incidents that threaten life, health and the environment. We also prevent fires through aggressive code enforcement, investigations, and fire safety education.

The Office of Fire Prevention is responsible for code enforcement, pre-construction plan review, issuing of permits, smoke detector certificate inspections and public education.
Residents and contractors are encouraged to visit the Fire Prevention Office at 400 Broadway using the rear entrance, or call Monday through Thursday, 8:00 am to 10:00 am and 3:30 pm to 4:30 pm. at (781) 286-8363
To apply for a Fire Alarm System permit, which is necessary for installing all required smoke and fire detection systems in commercial and residential buildings, visit www.revere.org/permitting.
The Fire Investigation Unit is responsible for determining the origin and cause of all fires and explosions that occur within the city. The members of the FIU work closely with the Office of the State Fire Marshal as well as local, state and federal law enforcement agencies to investigate these incidents. Fires that are a result of a criminal act are referred to the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office for prosecution.
The FIU also works with the Revere School Department, Mass Department of Children and Families and the court system to refer children who set fires to a Juvenile Firesetters Intervention program.

The certification/inspection fee is $50.00 per unit; it must be received at the time of inspection. Checks or Money Orders only, NO CASH. Fee is non-refundable.
A date and time period for the inspection will be assigned when the appointment is made. The inspection should be requested at least ten (10) business days in advance of the desired date. Inspections are scheduled on a first come, first served basis.
BEFORE the inspection, the alarm system should be checked by the owner, agent or electrician for proper operation and placement/location of detectors.
Inspection Day
Be at the location for the time slot provided.
If the applicant is not at the location when the Inspector arrives, the application will be returned as a FAILED
The system will FAIL automatically if the detectors are not mounted or operating properly. The Inspector is not there to install batteries or detectors or to direct someone else to perform these procedures.
The Inspector may require removal of detectors for further inspection.
Have keys and access to ALL areas of the building. If the Inspector cannot get into an apartment or area, the inspection FAILS.
Automatic failures may end the inspection until items are corrected and a new appointment is made.
Posted Street Number shall be visible from the approaching street. Number shall be of contrasting color from the area posted (MGL Chapter 148 and 59), and a minimum of 3 inches tall. Not meeting this section shall be an automatic FAILURE of the inspection.
Certificates are valid for sixty (60) days from the date issued.

Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detector Requirements
In one or two family residences built before 1975, all NEW battery powered detectors must be of the speaking type and have 10 year, sealed, non-rechargeable, non-replaceable batteries as well as a hush button to silence nuisance alarms.
In one or two family residences built before 1975, existing battery powered detectors that are more than 10 years old, or have exceeded the manufacturer’s recommended life must be replaced with battery powered detectors of the speaking type with 10 year, sealed, non-rechargeable, nonreplaceable batteries as well as a hush button to silence nuisance alarms.
No detector shall remain in service past the manufacturer’s expiration date.
If no date is visible, detector will be considered to have FAILED.
Detectors shall be UL listed, known brand names such as Kidde, First Alert and BRK purchased from local big box and hardware stores.
Online purchases have been shown not to operate correctly and will not be accepted per Mass Department of Fire Services directive.
On hard wired systems, intermixing brand names and/or ages of detectors (beyond a couple of years), shall be an automatic FAIL.
Detectors must contain a hush feature to silence nuisance alarms.
Smoke detectors must be photoelectric. Can be a combination with carbon monoxide detector.
All smoke/carbon monoxide detectors shall be mounted on the ceiling per manufacturer recommendations.
One (1) smoke/carbon monoxide detector for every 1200 square feet of living space.
A minimum of one (1) smoke/carbon monoxide detector required on every habitable level including the basement.
One (1) smoke/carbon monoxide detector outside of each separate sleeping area and one (1) smoke detector inside each bedroom on new construction or renovations or full battery systems.
If a bedroom is located off of a kitchen, the smoke/carbon monoxide detector shall be located inside the bedroom.
One (1) smoke detector on the ceiling at the base of ALL stairways leading to the floor above including the basement. (but not within stairways)
If basement is unfinished then detector shall be on the bottom of a floor joist. If the basement is partitioned in any way additional detectors may be required.
